Loosing weight in your Bellyboat

Posted on 20 October 2013 by Philip

In this article I would like to explain why I am using Lipo batteries to power my fishfinder on my bellyboat. I am getting a lot of questions about this subject so I think it is time to spread the info.

One of my other hobbies is flying remote-controlled airplanes, to power the airplane we use Lipo batteries because they are very light and have a lot of power. This is the same battery that’s in your smartphone!

What is a lipo battery

Lithium-ion polymer batteries, polymer lithium-ion or more commonly lithium polymer batteries (abbreviated Li-poly, Li-Pol, LiPo, LIP, PLI or LiP) are rechargeable (secondary cell) batteries. LiPo batteries are usually composed of several identical secondary cells in parallel to increase the discharge current capability, and are often available in series “packs” to increase the total available voltage. Benefits of using Lipo batteries

Light weight

The battery that I use is a 1000 mAH 3 cell lipo with a weight of 87 gr. I use a 1000mAH because this is the battery that came out of my airplane. Now I am switching over to a 2200mAH for longer use of the fishfinder. A normal acid battery weighs around 2.5 kg and that’s a lot in a small bellyboat.

Available in a huge power range.

My Lowrance X4Pro fishfinder needs a 10 to 17 volt DC, 3 cell lipos have 11,1 volt. You can go up to 4 cells lipos with 14,8 volt. The mAH range is going from 1000mAH up to 8400mAH.

It all fits nicely in your bellyboat

It all fits nicely in your bellyboat, don’t put it where you rest your arm or where there’s any other weight on it

What to choose?

That’s simple, in the manual of your fishfinder you can find how much mAh your device needs per hour. My X4Pro needs 170 mAH with lights off and 240mAH with lights on. So I can use the fishfinder almost 6 hours with lights out on a 1000mAh 3 cell Lipo and almost 13 hours by using a 2200mAH 3 cell Lipo.

The most popular size lipo in the R/C world is a 2200mAH 3 cell lipo. Therefor the value for money is the best with this product. You can go higher on the mAh but the price will go up to, the price of a 2200mAH is only $ 7,81 so you can buy 4 and fish for days, if a lipo dies you have backup!

In the specifications of lipos you will find the discharge rate C. This lets you know how quickly a lipo can give the power. In our application this is not relevant so order a c20, they are cheap. If you fly a big ass helicopter you have a motor that needs a lot of power quickly and then a high C rate is better.

Where to buy?

You can buy lipos at Ebay, Conrad our your local R/C hobby store. I buy them at because they are good en have the best price. They have a warehouse in every region, also in the Netherlands, this safes time and customs trouble. Edit: please check out the comments below about Not everyone seems to be satisfied about their service. If you are in doubt wether to place your order there, you can always use these links to check out what products you need, and order them somewhere else.

What can go wrong

I’ve used lipo batteries for some years now and I’ve never had any problems with them. But be sure to follow the rules above. If you don’t, you can expect bad things to happen:

Great idea and after reading this articles immediately placed an order at hobby king. Only the reality is that I have no package got from hobby king. Until today within Now they’re finally after much wrangling deposit my money back. All in all I have thus had nothing and I still have a heavy battery, after 4 months:-)

The solution is fine, but my experience with hobbyking are very poor.

      Hi Twan,

I’m sorry for the late response. I’m glad you pointed this out. Any one else with this issue? I’ve heard a similar story from another buddy too. I’ve added a reference in the article to this comment for the other readers.

We are in no way affiliated with, we are just some happy customers that find the website great because it usually offers all the things you need to set up this system, and they are cheaper than most competitors.

      Cheers, Vincent

    Hi Twan

I also ordered my batteries at the Hobbyking website about 4 months ago but haven’t received them either! Did you order from the Global or European warehouse? I ordered from the Global warehouse since the batteries weren’t in stock in Europe. Right now they are, so I am considering ordering them again from the European warehouse… Unless you had this same problem with the European warehouse too.

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Simon,

Hmm, too bad to hear. I have still mixed feelings about this company any i won’t order anything by this company.

I ordered from an European warehouse, but the package was shipped by malasyan airlines. That was also weird.

I got my money back now.

      Good luck with it!!

      Hi Cornelis

I cancelled my order from the Hobbyking global warehouse and ordered the batteries again from the EU warehouse. Luckily I received them within less than a week!
